My introduction to telephone wire as a design element was during a conversation with Kenya’s Gemini Desai. In Africa resources are scarce and materials are repurposed in a myriad of ways. The idea of using telephone wire in my designs did not materialize until I found a large spool of cat 3 25 cable following a construction project in our building.
When I started ‘engineering’ the fiesta bead necklaces, the telephone wire proved to be the perfect element to highlight the colorful disks and add the strong connection required to anchor the disks to the buna cord.
I would like to thank all of the artists who have sent me ‘scraps’ of telephone wire through the years. Since fiber optic cable is the future of communication, I treasure every inch I have stored in the studio.
